Bermuda Guide Part One

Bermuda National Trust Shops: For items handmade by local artisans on the island, I love the Bermuda National Trust’s Trustworthy shops at Waterville in Paget and The Globe in St George’s. It’s especially my favorite place to shop during Christmas!

TABS: Home to the Bermuda suit, TABS designs the classic ensemble for men (that encompasses Bermuda shorts, Bermuda knee-high socks and a sharp blazer) in a rainbow of hues. We are thankful that this must-visit Bermudian shop also carries our sun hats.

Coral Beach Club: Coral Beach Club's views and the pink sand stretch of beach it sits on are legendary. The member's only club is one of the most glamorous spots on the island with some of the club’s structures built before 1650. Find our sun hats here, at the club’s small buttery shop steps away from the beach.

Tuck Shop: Half bakery-half general store, Tuck Shop, in the Southampton parish of the island, is truly a tucked away treasure. The cutest womenswear, childrenswear, gifts, bakery, and coffee shop (all in one!) on the island. All thoughtfully curated by the chicest Bermudian, Alicia Tucker. I never leave without an iced coffee and a new sundress!

The English Sports Shop: If you didn’t pack your Bermuda shorts and wool knee-length socks, swing into The English Sports shop right when you land. The island’s most iconic shop was founded in 1918 and also known for their preppy pastel sweaters embroidered with a throwback Bermuda crest.

VINTAGE SHOPPING & ANTIQUE THRIFTING

When I was still living in New York City, I had heard from an iconic Manhattan decorator that Bermuda was an incredible island for “thrifting.” Searching for antique treasures has always been one of my most passionate hobbies. I have thrifted all over the world and I must say that Bermuda truly has exceptional antique furniture, porcelain dinnerware, silver, embroidered linens, rugs, textiles, and curiosities of all kinds to uncover. So why is Bermuda a thrifter and antique treasure-hunter’s paradise? Because, historically Bermuda has been a stopover for ships on their way elsewhere. For centuries, settlers and transient expats have come to the island with containers filled with prominent global goods to decorate their island homes. At estate sales and thrift stores in Bermuda, collectible antiques go for next to nothing compared to the states.

The most curated thrift store in Bermuda is called Orange Bay and it is where I found most of the antique chandeliers and vintage kilim rugs that fill our house. If you don’t mind digging for unexpected treasures and know you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, I would highly recommend dropping in Habitat for Humanity Bermuda, The Barn, and PALS. For decorative island finds worthy of Christie's or Sotheby's: Island antiquarian Raj Tolerman has opened a treasure chest of antique discoveries on Front Street at his new shop Hilgroves Bermuda (101 Front Street). If you are truly up for a thrifting adventure, I would check for Estate sales on Facebook Marketplace and local second-hand website Emoo.bm.
